A two-day International Conference on Economic Policies for Inclusive Development has been inaugurated by the Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee yesterday at the ITC Hotel Maurya, New Delhi.
After the day's session, a selected group of economists were invited by the Prime Minister's office for sharing of thoughts, followed by dinner with the Prime Minister.
Among the few economists met by the Prime Minister, Amar Yumnam of Manipur University was also there.
When contacted on phone, Amar Yumnam stated that in the personal interaction with the Prime Minister, they exchanged notes on some critical issues for development and political economy of the State.
This is the first such international conference organised by the Union Ministry of Finance.
On the opening day, two special lectures were delivered by Professor Michael Spence of New York University Nobel Laureate in Economics on "Growth and Employment in the Post-Crisis World Economy" and another on "Inclusive Growth in Small, Medium and Large" by Professor Lant Pritchett of Harvard University.
There were two business sessions on the opening day.
In the session on Corporates and Economic Development chaired by TKA Nair, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister entrepreneurs like Sunil Bharti Mittal spoke.
In the other session on Fiscal and Monetary Policies for Inclusive Development, Nirvikar Singh of University of California, Santa Cruz, Amar Yumnam of Manipur University and Vikas Chitre of the Indian School of Political Economy spoke on some critical issues for policy reforms for inclusive development.
