Ostensibly to deal with the prevailing law and order situation, the SPF Government Cabinet which met today has decided to extend the Disturbed Area tag for a period of one more year.
Talking to The Sangai Express a well placed source informed that the Cabinet discussed a five point agenda during the meeting.
The decision to extend the imposition of the Disturbed Area status for a period of another one year was taken after minutely discussing the prevailing law and order situation and the increased activities of underground organisations, said the source.
The Disturbed Area status has been enforced in Manipur for the last 24 years.
It is significant that the decision of the Cabinet to extend the Disturbed Area tag has come even as Irom Sharmila Chanu has been on a fast unto death agitation since November 2000 demanding the revocation of all black laws from the soil of Manipur.
The Cabinet has also decided to convene the Monsoon session of the Assembly from June 14, said the source.
The agitation launched by the part time lecturers also featured in today's agenda.
After minute discussions, the Cabinet decided to extend the services of 346 part time lecturers from October 31 last year till March this year.
At the moment the part timers are demanding the regularisation of their service.
The Cabinet however decided to defer the post creation of 106 aided elementary schools.
The source further said that the Cabinet today confirmed the by circulation decision issued on April 27 to regularise the services of casual employees of Pina Section of the Cluster Type Training Fibre Production Centre.
