Four languages of hill districts given recognition; ADC set to go to polls on May 30

The State Cabinet which met today with Chief Minister O Ibobi in the chair has decided to hold elections to the Autonomous District Council on May 30 as well as to give recognition to four languages of the hill districts and to introduce the same in the school syllabus upto Class VIII.
According to Government spokesman and Education Minister M Okendro, election to the ADCs will be held on May 30 and the result will be announced on June 8 .
Voting will start from 7 in morning on May 30 and the same will go on till 4.30 in the evening, said Okendro.
The draft electoral roll for the said elections will be published on March 30.The last date for changing or altering the draft election roll will be April 13 and the final electoral roll will be published on April 20 .
The public notification for the ADC polls will be published on April 30 .

Giving other details, Okendro said that the last date for filing nomination papers of intending candidates is May 6 .
Scrutiny will be held on May 7 and the last date of withdrawal of nomination papers is May 11 .
If needed, repoll will be held on June 4.Counting will be held on June 8 and the respective Returning Officers will announce the poll results, added the Minister.
All works related to the elections will wind up by June 15 .
Notably the State Cabinet in its last meeting held on March 23 had decided to hold the ADC elections on time.
Accordingly the State Election Commission had asked the State Government to permit issuing the tentative date for the said elections.
The State Cabinet also decided to approve Maram, Anal, Maring and Simte languages and accordingly to introduce them in the school syllabus upto Class VIII.
With the latest Cabinet nod, the number of languages given the go ahead signal is 13.These languages are to be introduced in the school syllabus.
There are in all 39 dialects in the hill districts.
Some of the conditions laid down for recognition include, a population of not less than 10,000 speaking the said language and there should be books, magazines and journals published in the language.
There are 42,255 people speaking Maram language (35 villages), 21,242 speaking Anal language (23 villages), 11,065 people speaking Simte language (12 villages) and 23,2238 people speaking Maring language (23 villages).
These figures have been arrived at as per the report submitted by the Planning and Implementation Department.
