Imphal, April 12 2011:
Miscreants set on fire the office building and two vehicles (Boleros) of the Youth Affairs and Sports Department located inside Khuman Lampak today morning.
On the other hand, a strike has been launched in the Department in protest against the promotion of a PET (Physical Education Teacher) as the Deputy Director (Physical Education) in-charge of the Department on the basis of an UO note issued by the Chief Minister after rectifying the RRs on the sly as well as against the alleged discriminatory attitude of allotting different grade and pay scale among the PETs.
The act of arson at the office the office building and vehicles of the Department took place at around 10.05 am today.
The miscreants reportedly went straight inside the office room of the PA to the Director and set on fire the files related to the cashier as well as those related to training and coaching in the Establishment Section and in the drivers' room.
Later, the miscreants set aflame two Bolero kept inside the garage of the Department.
The registration numbers of the two vehicles are respectively MN01W/1525 and NN06L/1467 .
As the incident took place when the staff of the Department had started coming to the office, they alerted the fire service and made every possible efforts to minimise the damage.

Director in-charge of the Department L Jayanta said that he was inside his office room at the time of the fire. However, he declined to comment on the possible reason behind the arson and who may be involved.
He also denied any pressure from any quarters.
The Chowkidar of the office, who was present in his quarters at the time of the incident, also maintained that he did not have any idea who were behind the arson.
Meanwhile, the suspended strike of the Youth Affairs and Sports Employees' Association has been resumed.Talking to mediapersons in connection with resumption of their strike, the Association secretary asserted that it is high time to cleanse the rot in the Department.
The secretary informed that while there is discontentment over the difference in the pay scale of 17 PETs along with their appointment as Lecturer in Physical Education in January last year, MPSC approved the pay scale of only 13 PETs out of the 17 on August 28 last year.
The Association launched a strike in protest against the discriminatory step.
However, following the assurance that the mattet of line of promotion, pay scale and other demands, would be looked into, the strike had been suspended.
But the Government has went ahead with announcement on implementation of the new pay scale and given promotion to one PET identified N Nillababu as the Deputy Director (Physical Education) in-charge through amendment on the basis of an UO issued by the Chief Minister through amendment the RRs on the sly.
This is unfortunate, the secretary said, and pointed out that for an individual to be promoted to the post of Deputy Director, he or she should have worked in the capacity of DYSO for at least 4 years in accordance to the RRs.
