Activists protest bail move of rape accused

Comprehending appearance of rape accused s Ngaopuni before the court today, activists of diffe-rent women organisations and NGOs briefly staged demon-stration at Cheirap Court pre- mises to demand cancellation of the accused person's bail application, if any.
The accused was, however not produced at the court with a police official, who accompanied prisoners brought to the court, informing the agitated women that as Ngaopuni's case hearing falls on June 4 the individual's presence at the court today was irrelevant.
Not convinced with the official's statement, some wo-menfolk even climbed into the prisoners' van to ascertain whether the rape accused was among the occupants.
Speaking to newspersons after confirming about Ngao-puni's absence, a JAC activist recounted that on April 17 - when the 16th Lok Sabha election for the outer mani-pur Parliamentary constituen- cy - 66 years old Ngaopuni asked a 13-year old Nepali girl to accompany him when he left his Poumai Colony (Chingmeirong) residence to cast vote at his native village in a Senapati district area.

Instead of exercise his democratic right, Ngaopuni allegedly took the girl to an isolated location at Kamei Ching (hill-lock) and outraged modesty of the minor girl.
Police rounded up the accused person the next day and since then has been lodged in the jail, said the JAC activist adding that today's demonstration was planned based on information that Ngaopuni would be applying for bail.
Insisting that legal authorities should not approve bail plea of the rape accused, the activist further cautioned that intense form of agitation would be launched if Ngao-puni is freed in any manner.
Besides JAC members, activists of All manipur Gor-kha Students' Union, All Mantripukhri Women's Society, Rongmei Women's Orga- nisation (Nagaland, Manipur, Assam), Tangkhul Sinaolong (Imphal), Tangkhul Sanaolong (Mantripukhri), Kanglatongbi Women's Society, Mantripukhri Meira Paibi, Chingmeirong Women's Society, etc., took part at the protest demonstration.
