We already heard that tale of King Dushyanta and Shakuntala. This Shakuntala, wife of King Dushyanta was the daughter of Menaka, the court dancer of Indradeva, the God. While Kousika Muni was in his deep meditation in the dense forest for several months Indra, the King of Gods had doubted that it would be the plan of Kousika Muni to snatch the crown. So Indradeva invented several designs to destroy Kousika's meditation. But all were in vain. At length Indra sent his court dancer Menaka to enchant the Muni. In the guise of an enchantress Menaka came before Kousika and conquered his heart. Kousika loved Menaka at the first sight and fell to a spell so that the two lovers we're physically united. At this moment Kousika could understand that he was defeated by Indra. With her unearthly power Menaka delivered a baby girl within a few seconds and returned the court of Indra. This baby girl grew up as Shakuntala. While King Dushyanta was hunting wild animals in the forest he met Shakuntala and fell in love. They married secretly and lived together in the Ashram for some days. After some days he left Shakuntala and returned to his palace. Kousika understood that her daughter conceived a baby. He sent his daughter to King Dushyanta. King Dushyanta forgot all his relationship with Shakuntala. So he drove her out. All the womanly characters and the hidden personalities of Shakuntala were drawn out at the moment of dialogue between Shakuntala and King Dushyanta. Raghumani could lay the emphasis on such atmosphere that most of the city men left hill girls after marriage. |
