A collection of Manipuri folk tales, written by Sarangthem Bormani, published by Universal Publications in 1999, Price Rs 10/-, page 43. Reviewed by: Konsam Kulladhwaja |
The booklet features eight folk tales. Most of the tales are popular ones. The tales like Hanuba Hanubi Pan Thaba, Tapta Lak-i, Pebet Amasung Houdong Lamboiba, Keibu Kei-Oiba, Ita Thaomei and Uchek Langmeidon are very popular and gripping. Children would like these tales. Elders may read the tales and tell the children these gripping tales. Or they may advise their children to read such interesting and useful booklets. Our ancestors gave us such folk tales. We should also give as gifts these tales to the future generation either in the form of oral or written literature. The tale Hanuba Hanubi Pan Thaba reflects the silly activities of an old couple. The young monkeys befooled them. At length, the couple became wiser and could enjoy the life happily. Tapta Lak-i is another which reflects the fearful feelings of a tiger. Unknowingly the tiger took a thief as Tapta and carried him far away to the woods. The thief also came to know that he was riding a tiger instead of a horse. He could somehow manage to escape from the tiger. Other tales like Ningol Mawa Apangba focus on the effects of a foolish man’s activities.
