A Manipuri novel written by Azad Komol, Published by Begum Suma in the year 1993, Price Rs 20/-, Page 77. Reviewed by: Konsam Kulladhwaja |
Israt Begum, the heroine of the novel is a woman who likes liberalism. She tries to liberalize her life but tumbles down. Her father Shikandar tries to marry her to Kadir Khan. This is an obstacle to the liberalization of the woman's life. At length, the heroine dies. This novel shows the reader the devaluation of the price of women. Weakness in the plot construction and characterization is apparent. But this young writer could develop a good style of writing. As a novelist he is a stylist. Economy of words is maintained. Azad Komol follows the style of Pacha Meitei. At the very outset the writer describes a village, "The stream of the creek diverged from the large river slowed to a trickle. Dividing the village into halves it flowed gently towards the east. Two narrow roads run parallel just on both the banks of the creek following the water. Though the roads are too narrow the passers-by are full in all the time". This is the place where the dead bodies of Samim Ahammad and his youngest son were buried. While burning the house, the father and the son were seriously injured and later on died on the spot. Samim was nothing but the editor of The Jihad, a journal. Israt Begum collects the issues of this journal and consults. She has a desire to give financial assistance to Yahaya, son of Samim Ahmmad. But he refuses the offer by the girl. He is an ideal man. There are many misunderstood terms such as Sadkah-Phitara, Jakat, Amal, Alim-Ulma etc. It would be very helpful if the writer gives the footnotes of these terms. |
