There is hardly any book of belle letters in Manipuri literature. It is praiseworthy to bring out such a book by IS Thingom of Silchar, Cachar district. G.C. Tongbra, MK Binodini and Elangbam Nilakanta were the pioneer of belle letter writers who had contributed their articles in the literary journals. In his collection of essays E. Nilakanta inserted the belle letters. Defining a belle letter Dr Johnson writes, it is a loose sally of the mind, an irregular undigested piece, not a regular and orderly performance. More details of it were stated by Alexander Smith - 'The essay as a literary form resemble lyric in so far as it is moulded by some central mood, whimsical, serious or satirical give the mood and the essay from the first sentence to the last grows around it as the cocoon around the silk worm'. Having knowledge of the English and Bengali definition of belle letter, I.S. Thingom writes the book. We could retrieve various subjects from this book. Emphasizing the egocentric nature of man, the writer presents his belle letter entitled Ei that is focused at the very outset of the book. To understand who am I would be the most important of all, writes the author concluding his belle letter. Ojha is the common name addressed by a man to his companion or the stranger. There are different groups of people - the educated groups or the uneducated groups use the word ojha while talking to their fellows, expressed the author in the belle letter entitled ojha (Sir).
