A living legend of Manipuri Nata Sankirtana, Shri Takhelchangbam Nganba Sharma was bom in 1924 at Khongman Mangjil Mamang, Imphal. He is also, perhaps, one of the oldest artistes and gurus of Nata Sankirtana music who at an advanced age of 91 years is still active sharing the intricacies of the art to interested scholars and researchers.
Shri Nganba Sharma started learning the art of Nata Sankirtana music from a young age.
He was barely 10 years of age when took up his first Sankirtana lessons under the tutelage of Guru S. Ningthou Sharma.
Having mastered the basics of the art, he further received training in the finer details of the art under various distinguished gurus such as A. Angoubi Sharma, K. Ibomcha Sharma and G. Iboton Sharma.
Having gained such a vast repertoire of practical and theoretical knowledge, Shri Nganba matured to become one of the most respected artistes and gurus of Nata Sankirtana music.
Over the years, he has performed extensively all over the State and other parts of the region in a plethora of festivals as well as religious ceremonies.
Even today, people fondly recount his performances, which represent a perfect blend of energy, emotion and melody.
Shri Nganba Sharma has also been associated with several cultural organisations as visiting guru, advisor etc. Decorated with many honours, he is also a recipient of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad 's Sangeet Bhusan and Sangeet Ratna.
In recognition of his exemplary contribution to Nata Sankirtana music, Shri Takhelchangbam Nganba Sharma is honoured with Manipur State Kala Akademi Fellow.
