Restoration of Largest Community Pond and handing over water filter at relief camp at Tentha on 29 August 2015
Tentha, Thoubal district was very badly affected by the recent flood. Tentha Marongban flood relief camp is still under operation with 5 flood affected families (total 29 people)., while many continue to live attached to their relatives.
All the six community ponds of the village are not usable as there were filled with muddy flood water. Joint Needs Assessment report from Sphere India reported that humanitarian needs in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) are most apparent and recommended for Water testing of currently used drinking water, Chlorine tablets at household level, Hygiene kit with covered water storage, sanitary items for women, soap, Rehabilitation of ponds and Debris cleaning.
In continuing effort of the goodwill project to restore 50 community ponds damaged by recent flood at different villages of Thoubal District and distribution of 100 water filtration units to relief camps of Chandel and Thoubal districts, DM and H2M volunteers today conducted treatment of two community ponds: one at Kakching and another at Tentha.
The community pond at Kakching Wairi Pung pareng manung pukhri is used to provide potable water in that locality. While, the largest community pond (pond size ~ 40 times of average ponds of 50 X 60 ft) of Tentha namely Tentha Pukhri Achouba at Tentha Mayai Leikai is being treated with volunteering efforts from number by DM/H2M volunteers with support from many local volunteers.
A water filtration unit is also provided for using at Tentha Marongban flood relief camp, which presently provides shelter of 5 families (29 members) of which house of one family was completely destroyed by flood water and rest are still going on for reconstruction or waiting fund to reconstruct their respective houses. All these families are BPL card holders. This will provide clean and safe water to the relief camp shelters.
This goodwill project is possible to execute with the funds generously donated by Manipuri Diaspora such as San Francisco Bay Area Manipuri Community, Manipuri Association of Canada (MAC), Korea Manipuri Association (KMA) supported by Indians in Korea, North American Manipur Association (NAMA) and generous individuals from India and abroad.
