Poppy worth Rs. 41 Crores destroyed in Chandel

The biggest ever poppy destruction was undertaken in Manipur Chandel from 13th Feb 15 to 17 Feb. 20 Assam Rifles under IGAR (S) carried out joint operation under Ms Tutusana, SP NAB with teams of Narcotics Action Bureau, Manipur Police, Civil Administration and other Government agencies in the area of Machi Sita Jn. Tonghlang, Hongjang and T/Huimol and destroyed illicit poppy cultivation of opium plants after having systematically examined the same.
The opium yield that measured approximately 5040 kgs worth Rs 41 crore approximate was destroyed by burning. The opium plantation was sperad over an area of 252 acres in the higher reaches. It was clandestinely cultivated far away from the view of the people around the area to avoid detection by enforcement agencies. The cultivation was not systematic and it was randomly carried out to prevent detection.
The extensive ops undertaken by 26 Sect, AR in remote areas let to the identity of these poppy fields and finally the destruction around 576 acres worth Rs. 96 crore approximately. No one came forward to claim the ownership of the cultivation. Due care was taken during the ops to ensure no loss or damage to personal property occurs and religious sentiments are not hurt.
