Akademi Award: Traditional Theatre (Gouraleela)
Shri Phuritshabam Chandra Singh, born in 1949 at Salungpham Mayai Leikai under Thoubal District, is a noted guru and artiste of Gouraleela- a traditional musical drama based on the events that took place in the life of Gauranga Mahaprabhu, a 15th century saint believed to be one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu.
Shri Chandra Singh was initiated into Gouraleela by his late father Ph. Pujari Singh who himself was a renowned guru of this traditional performing art.
Stepping into the shoes of his father with a firm intent to conserve this art from fading into oblivion, he further gain mastery in the art sitting under the feet of several other renowned gurus including Ng. Jugindro Singh, K. Ibotombi Singh, N. Partha Singh etc.
With the blessing of these gurus, Shri Chandra Singh went on become one of the most honoured exponents of Gouraleela.
He has performed as a Sutradhar, and sometimes as a Rashdhar, in several plays of Gouraleela as well as other Krishna leelas staged in all major places of worship spread throughout the State.
His euphonious voice filled with devotional fervour has also pi eased the audience beyond the nine hill ranges in places such as Kolkata and Bangladesh.
He is also credited with organising many such plays besides training several students from different part of the region.
Also adept in Nata Sankirtana, he has been conferred with Dr. Ambedkar Fellowship Award and Natya Bhushan besides several other recognitions.
For his distinguished efforts to revive and popularise Gouraleela, Shri Phuritshabam Chandra Singh is bestowed with Manipur State Kala Akademi Award.
