NRIs View On The Issue Of North East Indians As Immigrants Or Migrants To Delhi
February 6, 2015
We the NRI Assamese society in UK are very hurt to see the narrow sectarian attitude by the Central govt. towards the people of North-East . In UK we are proud to be Indians . But first we are Assamese. With due respect to our Prime Minister: Narendra Modi ji now he should be reminded that his sentimental and emotional speech to the people of Assam before the election campaign was a crocodile tears.
This is the second time Central govt has reminded us how Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru felt sorry for the people of Assam when China was about to take over in 1963.The news terming the people of North-East as immigrants in the BJP vision document is not surprising. Narendra Modi ji is also a good orator.
In his election campaign in Guwahati when he mentioned Gopinath Bordoloi and Jai Aai Asom Assamese people were moved. Now he proved otherwise. BJP says sorry only after seeing Assam is burning. We are waiting to see a public apology. This should be a good education for Modiji if he really means unity and diversity.
On behalf of NRI (Non-Resident Indians) Assamese in UK, this is our strong view :
"North East Indians are not immigrants to Delhi or any other parts of India. Nor we are migrants. The word 'migrant' actually mean temporary immigrants. We use the word 'migrant' for migrant workers etc in case of Bangladesi workers. In UK and USA they use the word to denote the migrant Mexican workers. As such it is completely wrong and insult to the Northeast Indians for any political party to state that North East Indians are immigrants or migrants in India. The party should make a public apology to the North East Indians for making such wrong statement. If any political party want to give protection to the North East Indians, they should state that 'The Northeast Indians will be given full protection as Indian citizens in all parts of India."
We are not campaigning for any party. We as an NRI want to see who can give North-East a proper recognition .
Few NRI families are in Guwahati at present.
