May 13 2005 New Delhi: 100 detentions for questioning, 12 team with over 150 police combing across the city and beyond, no headway in the Delhi gang raped case.
It has already been exactly four days after the incident took place in which a girl from Meghalaya was forcefully abducted and gangs -raped by four assailants in
the wee hour of the Sunday morning in Delhi.
Considering the gravity of the brutal crime and negligence of the Delhi police, M.Ps from the northeast met Home Minster Shivraj Patel on Tuesday for immediate arrest of
the culprits who are on the run as the police are so inactive and callous making every one unhappy. M.Ps are upset because this will create further sense of
alienation among the Northeast people.
They pointed out that Delhi police, who have been informed by victim’s friend 15 minutes after the rape incident, could not nab the rapists due to their total negligence. NorthEast M.Ps also raised the issue in both the House of Parliament very strongly on Monday at the Zero hour.
They also demanded girls hostels for the north east students as many students come to Delhi for studies and Delhi is not a safe place for girls. Shivraj Patel assured them that action would be taken at the earliest possible.
The North East Student Co-ordination Council, Delhi, who is after the case, has submitted memorumdam to the Home Minister demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits
and suspension of the southwest DCP, Deepandra Pathak for being too biased and negligence in dealing with the case.
The council has also demanded a special cell for northeast people numbering about 20,000 under Delhi police not below the rank of ACP.
The council said that they would wait till 15 may for the Delhi police to nab the culprits, if nothing has done within given period, the council along with other northeast organizations will take future actions against the police. The North East Student Co-ordination council also met and submitted the memorandum to the Chief Commissioner of Delhi Police.
Candle light protest procession was held in the south campus of Delhi University where hundreds of students both from northeast and the locals, academicians, women groups, human rights defenders, activists gathered.
The victim is not permitted to meet any outsiders except the police, as the investigation is underway. She is also taken care by an NGO called Parayas.
The police are now following the lead gathered from the victim information. Portraits of the culprits are made based on her memory and published in the newspapers.
But still the senior student from the north east are so worried and skeptical about the development as there are lots cases usually get evaporated in the Delhi police station.
And cases are being compromised between the victims and culprits with Delhi police playing the role of middle persons.
