Mob lynched rapist at Dimapur, situation remains tense
Kohima, Mar 5 2015 (NEPS):
An unruly mob of around 4000 had pulled down two gates of Dimapur central jail and took the alleged rapist out of the jail and lynched him on Thursday.
Syed Farid Khan, suspected to be illegal Bangladeshi, was accused of raping a 20-year-old Naga woman, a college student, on February 23 and 24. Police arrested the rapist on February 25 and sent him to judicial custody. And today the unruly mob of around 4000 proceeded towards central jail located some 7 kilometers away from Dimapur and broke open the two gates and pulled the rapist out of the jail.
Khan was beaten and pulled him naked towards Dimapur’s landmark City Tower. He reportedly died before reaching City Tower due to thrashing. “We tried our best to rescue him but could not as the crowd outnumbered us,” a police official following the unruly mob told the NEPS over phone.
Several organizations led by NSF and Naga Women Hoho on Wednesday called a shutdown seeking stern action against the rapist. Later the protestors started targeting shops allegedly run by illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and vandalized at least 20 shops.
The situation in and around Dimapur, the commercial hub of Nagaland, is very tense and curfew has been clamped. “We are making all out efforts that normalcy returns in Dimapur,” said W Kenye, Dimapur DC.
Meanwhile, in an emergency Cabinet meeting held today at 7:00 pm in the residential office of Chief Minister expressed its shock and regret at the death of Syed Farid Khan, the accused in a rape incident, at the hands of an unruly mob in Dimapur.
As Chief Minister away in Delhi, the cabinet meeting was chaired by Kiyanilie Peseyie, Minister, Social Security & Welfare and Parliamentary Affairs.
Strongly condemning the manner in which the mob took the law into their own hands, leading to the unfortunate death of the accused in their hands, it further appeal to all peace loving citizens of Nagaland to allow the due process of law to take its own course, and not to indulge in violence or vandalism.
The Cabinet also decided to institute a high level inquiry Committee to inquire into the incident, and find out the circumstances leading to the unfortunate happenings, and also any lapses or shortcomings on the part of any public servant in connection with the incident, and the person or group of persons responsible for the violence leading to the death of the said accused in the hands of the mob, and to suggest measures to avoid recurrence of such incidents in future.
Meanwhile, the Government of Nagaland has requested editors of all local papers and media-persons in the State to be sensitive to the possible repercussions to the acts of the mob at Dimapur today. It further asked to specially avoid “inflammatory or provocative pictures of the ugly incident in their reports/publications.”
“Many ugly objectionable pictures are already on social media, but the traditional media which is available more widely has been requested to be more sensitive and apply self-censorship as they see fit to help mitigate the possible ramifications,” the advisory of the Government stated.
