The Manipuris of Tripura were migrated from Manipur in the 18th Century. At present their population in Tripura is near about
Twenty Thousand. Inspite of residing outside of Manipur they are still maintaining their own language & culture properly.
Once the Manipuri "Nritya-Gurus" of Tripura spreaded the Manipuri Dances all over India in collaboration with
Kabi Guru Rabindranath tagore. The Manipuri literary activities in Tripura are also going on smoothly.
Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Imphal honoured two pioneer writers of Tripura, Keithellakpam Chandrakumar & Gurumayum Rajeshwar Sharma by awarding them Sahitya Bhusan & Kabyabhusan respectively.
Recently L. Ibomcha (L. Birmangal) has been awarded "Kamini Kumar Gold Medal, 2007" for his short story collection "Mahadebki Wari". Including this awardee book Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Tripura published above twenty Manipuri books.
Manipuri students of Tripura are also not lagging behind. Till now, two Manipuri students of Tripura got ranked in top 10 in the board exam. Even cracked the JEE. Two students achieved Gold medal in the Post Graduate Final Exam of Tripura University.
Till date four Manipuri schoolers of Tripura have done Ph.D in different field, three schoolers are also on research. There are eight Manipuri doctors in Tripura & another three are studying. Ten Manipuri Engineers are working in Tripura & fifteen are working outside the state. There are also seven Manipuri advocates.
Besides this, there are some some Manipuri Readers & Lecturers in Colleges, University and some officers are also in Banks, State Govt's various departments. But at this moment there is no Manipuri IAS & TCS officer in Tripura. Engg & MBA Manipuri students of Tripura could able to grabe jobs in different renowned National & Multinational Companies.
In order to encourage Manipuri students in studies Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Tripura started to felicitate the meritorious Manipuri students, passed in the 1st division in Secondary & Higher secondary exam since 2004.
In 2007, fourty one (41) Manipuri students of Tripura passed in 1st division.
On 25th December 2007, they were felicitated at Agartala, Rabindra Bhavan. As Chief Guest, Prof. Mihir Deb, Chairman of State Pollution Board & as Guest of Honour, Mr. S. Hirendra Sinha, President's Awardee Teacher; Mr. K.Jatindra Sinha, Nritya-Guru of Biswabharati; Mr. M. Bibhaskanti Singha, Chief Engineer, ONGC; Mr. Dipak Ranjan Nath, President OBC Officers Welfare Society & Mr. Pramodlal Ghose,
President, Jadab Mahasabha were present on the occasion. Mr. S. Suresh, President of MSP, Tripura presided over the function.
Respected guests felicitated the 41 Manipuri students by presenting them "Mayengbam Radhamohan Memorial Medal" & "Ch. Khelendra Memorial Award".
Among them 11 students were also awarded for their special credits in Secondary & H.Secondary Exam, by
- "Dr. Birendra Chandra Memorial Award (Rs.5000/-)",
- "L. Ratan Kumar Award (Rs.4000/-)",
- "Tonambam Uma Award (Rs.3000/-)",
- "Laishram Tanoubi Award (Rs.1500/-)",
- "Swaraijam Jogeswar-Basanti Award (Rs.1000/-)" and
- "Maibam Dhabala-Tombirei Award (Rs. 500/-)".
Also for getting 3rd place in NERIST JEE, Prithwiraj Singha has been awarded Rs. 2000/- cash as special award. Family members of the iminent Manipuri personalities of Tripura sponsored the above mentioned awards in memory of them.
