Akademi Award: Tribal Culture
Born in 1936 at Keishamthong Kabui Village, Imphal, Shri Meiphunlung Thaimei is noted exponent of tribal culture and literature.
Very few people have contributed so richly to the culture of their community like him.
His artistic interest lies in singing and acting. From the early age of 9, he began to learn group song and later participated in competitions.
He was awarded best actor in a play called Kapuning staged by Keishamthong Kabui Youth Club. He was also associated with Ragailong Cultural Song and Dramatic Union for 10 years as its president.
A retired Headmaster of Government High School, Shri Thaimei has also contributed to the cause of Kabui literature.
He has written and published a novel in Kabui language entitled Kaman Makmei Mikdui, a drama in Kabui language called Gairemnang, and an essay in Manipuri and Kabui, Kabui Eshei gee Maramda besides having edited a journal in Kabui named Dicham.
In recognition of his contributions to the cause of tribal culture, Shri Meiphunlung Thaimei is bestowed with the Manipur State Kala Akademi Award.
