Akademi Award: Literature (Critical Work)
Born in 1949, Shri Longjam Joychandra of Keisuamthong Longjam Leirak, Imphal, is a renowned critic of Manipuri literature and also a noted translator.
A litterateur par excellence with a deep understanding of Manipuri culture, he has also served as an administrator in different capacities.
Having completed an M.A. in English from Vishva Bharati University, Shantiniketan and another M.A. in Manipuri from Manipur University, Canchipur, Shri Joychandra started his career as a Lecturer in 1975 before becoming the Secretary of Manipur State Kala Akademi in 1992.
Later he served as Director, Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy. In between he had also served as Convenor, Manipuri Language Advisory Board, Sahitya Akademi.
At present, he is serving as Registrar, Manipur University of Culture. His vast experience as a professional coupled with a profound understanding of Manipuri literature has immensely helped him as a writer.
So far, he has published three books viz.. Chinunggi Sana Loktagi Paibiraklo, Khouganglaba Lamlen - the writer’s Manipuri translation of TS Eliot’s The Waste Land - and Manipuri Sahitya.
Besides, he has presented a plethora of seminar papers on several aspects of Manipuri literature.
A collection of 33 critical essays, Manipuri Sahity a discusses different aspects of Manipuri literature with deep critical insight.
With occasional use of similes and metaphors, the work bears the hallmark of sound critical judgement of contemporary Manipuri literature.
This book has earlier earned him the first Hueiyen Lanpao Literary Award (2013).
In recognition of his exemplary contribution to Manipuri literature and its enrichment through his book Manipuri Sahitya, Shri Longjam Joychandra is honoured with Manipur State Kala Akademi Award.
