Akademi Young Talent Award: Thang-Ta
Born in 1982, Smt. Gurumayum Asharani Devi of Brahmapur Guruaribam Leikai, Imphal, is perhaps one of the few successful female artistes of Thang-Ta who at a young age has contributed immensely for the promotion of the art.
Daughter of illustrious Thang-Ta guru (L) Padmashri G. Gourakishor Sharma, she was bom into a family which is known for its rich legacy for promotion and preservation of the traditional Manipuri martial art, Thang-Ta - an art which is deeply rooted in the religious beliefs, spirituality and lifestyle of the Manipuris.
She grew up learning the basics of Thang-Ta from her father.
Under his watchful eyes, she also mastered the finer aspects of the art such as posing the correct physical postures and body movements during performances.
She also received training in the art from other noted gurus including G. Sana Sharma, K. Sanathoiba Sharma and K. Biren Singh.
Furthermore she acquired a degree in Thang-Ta, thus giving herself a strong foundation required for a long and successful career in Thang-Ta.
A recipient of Junior Fellowship, Ministry of Culture, Govt, of India, she has performed widely both inside and outside the country in various national festivals and major cultural events.
Besides, not only has she participated in various workshops and seminars of Thang-Ta but has conducted workshops in various aspects of the art.
A young achiever, she has been bestowed with Dr. Amhedkar Award and Jhansi Rani Award.
In recognition and in encouragement of her promising talents, Smt. Gurumayum Asharani Devi is conferred with Manipur State Kala Akademi Young Talent Award.
