Electrology as career option
Ranjan K Baruah *
Electrology is the practice of electrical hair removal to permanently remove human hair from the body. Electrolysis is the actual process of removing hair using electricity. In electrolysis, a qualified professional called an electrologist slides a hair-thin, solid metal probe into each hair follicle without puncturing the skin (when inserted properly).
Electricity is delivered to the follicle through the probe, which causes localized damage to the areas that generate hairs, either through the formation of caustic sodium hydroxide (the galvanic method), overheating (thermolysis), or both (the blend method).
Electrology or Electrolysis is a unique beauty trade, that is continually growing popular among men and women alike who wish to get rid of unnecessary hair. Electrolysis is the method of removing hair from the face or from any part of the body by the application of heat using electric current, invented by Dr. Charles E. Michel, an ophthalmologist, to treat ingrown eyelashes.
Heredity, metabolic & hormonal conditions, certain medications, temporary hair removal methods and some illnesses can stimulate hair growth. Electrolysis is said to be the only medically recognized treatment for permanent hair deletion. Most areas of the body including bridge of the nose between eyebrows, eyebrows, hairline, hairs from moles, on the neck, face, breasts, chest, abdomen, thighs, shoulders, arms, under arms and legs can be treated with electrolysis.
Electrologists/ Electrolysis technicians are professionals specialized in the treatment of permanent hair removal. They use various electrolysis techniques and methods to remove unwanted hair. The Electrology programs cover topics such as skin and hair physiology, sterilization techniques, thermolysis, blend techniques & machines used office management, and principles of electricity.
After completing MBBS, one may do specialisations in this field as it has demand at present. Apart from MBBS, there are some short term courses in cosmetology or beauty courses where aspirants who have not studied MBBS may take up some courses. As beauty industry is growing so one may be self employed easily by starting own saloon or beauty clinic after obtaining some experience. It usually takes two to five years to become a self-employed Electrologist.
The hormone imbalance factor resulting in the unwanted growth of hair experienced in the human body of females and the desire for men and women to remove hair from their body for cosmetic purpose has made it necessary to find permanent solution for the removal of unwanted hair.
As a result there is a great demand for trained electrologists in India and other places. There are few institutes in India that offers courses related to this subject. Courses include Certificate in Electrology/Electrolysis; Diploma in Electrology/Electrolysis; P.G Diploma in Medical Radiology and Electrology (DMRE), etc. One must be skilled to get job or start own venture. Aspirants may look at the job portals for the vacancy related to same as they advertise against vacancies.
