Career options in Geology

Geology (Geo means earth and logos means Science) is a branch of science which deals with the physical structure and substance of the earth, their history, and the processes which act on them. Geology gives insight into the history of the Earth by providing the primary evidence for plate tectonics, the evolutionary history of life, and past climates.
Geology is important for mineral and hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation, evaluating water resources, understanding of natural hazards, the remediation of environmental problems, and for providing insights into past climate change. Geology also plays a role in geotechnical engineering and is a major academic discipline. A person who studies this subject is known as geologist. Geologists are scientists who study the earth’s crust to obtain an accurate picture of its structure, history, and composition.
It has been a subject of studies in different parts. As a career option this subjects provides many opportunities. There are a number of universities and Institutes offering bachelor, master and doctorate degree in Geology. After completing Post Graduates in Geology one may seek job in different areas including government sector and public sector undertakings or private establishments in our country.
One may start the course after passing out senior secondary in college level. The best part is that Union Public Service Commission holds separate exams for Geologists for recruitments in central governments agencies. Name of the examination which is conducted by UPSC is Combined Geo-Scientist and Geologist Examination.
Geologists may get employment in different departments and agencies. Some of the agencies or departments which hires geologists or engage geologists or offer job are: Geological Survey of India (GSI), Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Directorate of Geology and Mining (DGM), Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM), Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), National Geophysical Institute (NGRI), Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Ltd. (ONGC), National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC), National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), Minerals and Metals Trading Corporation (MMTC), National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA), State Mining Corporation (SMC), National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), Hindustan Zinc Limited, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), etc.
The Geological Survey of India (GSI), established in 1851, is a government organisation in India for conducting geological surveys and studies. It is one of the oldest of such organisations in the world. The GSI is the prime provider of basic earth science information to the government, industry and the general public.

ONGC Scholarships: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited is offering 500 scholarships each worth 48,000 per annum to meritorious SC/ST students. Out of this 50 % are reserved for girl students and scholarships are open for studies in India and for Indian nationals only. Candidates should be a student of 1st year of Graduate Engineering or MBBS courses or 1st year of Masters Degree in Geology/ Geophysics or MBA. Candidates should have obtained minimum 60% marks in 12th standard or 60% in graduation. The last date for submission of duly completed application form is 15th November.
Army Education Corps: Applications are invited from male post graduate for the grant of Permanent Commission in the Army Education Corps. Course commencing in July 2016 at Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun. Candidates must pass MA / M Sc with 1st or 2nd Division may apply. Age limit is 23 to 27 years. Last date of applying for the post is 27th October.
123rd Technical Graduate Course: Applications are invited from male engineering graduates for grant of Permanent Commission in the Army in all Arms/Services. 123rd Technical Graduate Course will be commencing from July 2016 at IMA. Last date for sending application is 27th October.
