Burmese activists staged a protest demonstration at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi on Dec 14 2011
About 60 Burmese activists staged a protest demonstration at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi from 11:00 to 12:00.
A memorandum was submitted to Prime Minister of India-
Memorandum on the visit of Parliamentarians from Burma/Myanmar to India
We, Burmese pro-democracy movement in India appreciate India for extending democracy education to visiting Burmese Hluttaw representatives. But we regret that India failed to provide democracy teaching to those who were freely and fairly elected in the election held in 1990.
In fact India’s offer comes late and the lesson is out of curriculum for Burma. Before that Burmese military must have leant constitution drafting and election commission before this parliament comes alive. The Burmese parliamentarians are those who are announced elected during that bogus election held in 2010.
We doubt that democracy practice learnt from India will be helpful in Burma because of the undemocratic constitution of 2008 which must be amended in accordance with democratic principles. Burmese military must also learn Indian Army which is dignified for keeping away from politics.
We also wish Burmese delegation to learn the role of opposition in Indian parliament. The current Hluttaw (parliamenta) in Burma deliberately minimize the voices of the opposition parties. In the election of 2010, the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) managed to hold 259 out of 330 seats added by 56 army officers in Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) and 129 out of 224 seats added by 110 army officers in Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House). That means 83.86% in the Lower House and 82.59% in the Upper House are military and semi-military representatives. There is no opposition but only non-UDDP minority members in the parliament.

We advise Burmese delegation to witness the campaign being staged by Anna Hazare who is fighting against the corruption because it is also rampant and unchecked from top to down in Burma. We urge the people of Burma to organize such nonviolent mass movement against corruption and injustice. This intolerable practice is widespread in India although legal system is superior. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi recently questioned the legal system in Burma.
Even though positive developments are taking place, the escalating warfare in Kachin State indicates that the new regime of Burma is yet to be trusted. Burma needs not only democracy but also lasting peace. Moreover hundreds of political prisoners are being held hostage. Burmese parliament has done just a little for the release of political prisoners.
We, Burmese pro-democracy movement in India would like to see Daw Aung San Suu Kyi visiting India!
