Key issues related to spreading awareness for protection of the environment had brought together internationally noted fusion musicians, folk performers, singers and activists on a single platform during the recently concluded second edition of “Where Have All The Flowers Gone?”, a three-day festival (April 29, May 2 and 3) of Music and Arts held at Santhei Natural Park, Andro Andro, Imphal East.
'Where Have All The Flowers Gone?' is a festival dedicated to honour and protect the environment and hosted renowned protest singer and song writer Susmit Bose who had been a friend of the Late American folk-protest singer Pete Seeger, also an environmental activist.
Aptly named after a song penned and sung by Pete Seeger in 1955, the festival was perhaps the only crowd funded event in recent times in Manipur. Day one of the festival (April 29) began with the launch of a tree plantation drive by Forest Man of India, and Padma Shri award recipient Jadav Molai Payeng from Assam, who raised an entire forest all alone by planting trees since 1979. Several volunteers accompanied Payeng in the tree plantation programme in and Imphal and Andro.
From May 2 till May 3, the organisers held painting competitions under environmental themes for school children; performance by Nachom Arts; interaction programmes etc.
The last day of the festival saw over five thousand participants from the valley districts and surrounding villages of Andro swaying to folk, fusion and experimental songs and music selected for the occasion.
The bands and singers who performed on May 3 include Imphal Talkies; Guru Rewben; Pebet (Pebet recently released their debut EP), renowned protest singer Susmit Bose, celebrated folk artiste Mangka and Manipuri rock veterans from the band Eastern Dark.
