AKHU
Akhu Chingangbam is one part of the folk alternative band from Imphal, called the Imphal Talkies.
As a child and later into his teenage years, Akhu spent a lot of time at a theatre in Imphal called the Imphal Talkies. The theatre only screened adult movies in conservative Imphal. Akhu insists adapting that name for the band added a protest feel to the idea of the band.
As a group, they just wanted to make music, their ideologies were woven in later. Akhu writes lyrics that are contemporary and ahead of his times. Akhu and his band are not only called to perform in music concerts but also at protests and marches.
They are aptly titled the Voice of the North East.
