Imphal, August 16 2009: The 17-hour general strike from the midnight of August 14 crippled normal life in Imphal on Independence Day.

However, the general strike was peaceful with no untoward incident.

The general strike was called by the five organizations of Northeast including Manipur Peoples Liberation Front (MPLF) to boycott the 63rd Independence Day celebration.

Markets in Poana Bazar, Thangal bazaar and other commercial centres were closed.

Inter state buses and the private transport vehicles were off the road.
