Imphal, August 17: Manipur State Commission for Women organised a consultation programme on women and child trafficking in the light of the present socio-economic and political scenario at Jawarlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy here today.

Giving the key note address of the consultation programme attended by many top officials of the Police Department, representatives of the NGOs and child rights and women rights activists, Chairperson of Manipur State Commission for Women Dr Ch Jamini pointed out that Women Commission has been empowered to investigate, examine and recommend to the Government on issues related to women.

However, with the co-operation of the police, NGOs, the people and the Government, the Commission cannot fully carry out any of its activities successfully.

Over the past few months, instances of kidnapping young children and trafficking of women have been witnessing in Manipur.

All that the Women Commission can do in these instances is to hold public consultation and recommend the suggestions given by the people on stopping child and women trafficking to the Government, Dr Jamini said.

In his address as chief guest of the inaugural function, MP Dr Meinya noted that kidnapping young children and recruitment them as child soldiers is a serious issue that need to be discussed.

How the problem has come about should be discussed right from the Government level to the family and the matter should not be taken lightly.

First Lady of the State Kiran Jagat, who presided over the function, appreciated the tasks accomplished by the Women Commission during its short span.

While pointing out that children are the future pillar of the society, she said it should be the duty of every person to protect the children from getting into criminal acts.

Civil societies, parents, students and Meira Paibis should come out and encourage the children.
