Imphal, March 04: Even as the 18-hour general strike called jointly by various social organisations protesting the alleged harassment, torture and molestation of Maibam Naobi Chanu by Police Commandos in their custody concluded with full public support, public outcry against despicable act of the police commandos poured in from numerous social organisations.

While announcing their unflinching support to the public demand for punishing the guilty police commandos, these social organisations also came down heavily on the Government for its alleged indifferent attitude to the whole issue.

Kangleipak Lamjing Apunba Meira Lup (Kanglamei) demanded the Government to produce the culprits and hand them over to the people.

Recounting the various past instances of excesses committed by police forces on innocent people and specially womenfolk, the women's body warned of launching intense agitation if the Government fails to punish the guilty police commandos.

Khwairamband Nupi Keithel Sinpham Amadi Saktam Kanba Lup said that the crime committed by the police commandos to Naobi amounts to crime against all the womenfolk in the State.

The excesses of the police commandos has infuriated the people to no end and the Government should understand the pulse of the people and accordingly take up some exemplary action against the guilty police commandos so that such incident do not recur.

Coming down heavily on the police commandos, the women's body asked whether their desire have been fulfilled after the beastly act committed on the innocent girl.

The police commandos should remember the nude protest staged by womenfolk in front of the Assam Rifles gate at Kangla and similar demonstration could be staged against them if they do not change their mindset, Lup secretary Kh Rani said in a statement.

Poirei Ita Meira Paibi Lup asserted that instituting judicial inquiry into any cases of human right violation should not be done merely to divert the attention of the people and shield the culprits.

Patsoi Kendra Development Council strongly condemned the alleged silence being maintained by the State and the Central Government over the issue.

The issue would have rocked the Parliament if it had happened in other parts of India like UP, Bihar, MP or West Bengal, Council secretary Sapam Samungou stated.

Apart from having violated the Constitutional rights of the innocent girl, there is no reason why immediate action should not be initiated against the guilty police commandos under Section 10 (1) (a), (aa) (b) and 2 of the Central Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeals) Rules, 1965, he pointed out.

North Imphal United Clubs and Meirapaibees Organisation (NIUCAMO) demanded resignation of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh who is also in-charge of the Home Department for his alleged failure to rein in the security personnel committing crimes against innocent people.

It is high time for all the people and organisations in the State to join hands for safeguarding the womenfolks from lecherous police commandos, the Organisation secretary N Jinjoy Singh exhorted in a statement.
