Combined force gun down UG suspect

Imphal, September 23: A suspected underground activist has been slain following an encounter with a combined team of Imphal West district police commandos and troops of 32 Assam Rifles at near Langthabal Kabui Khul (Khoupum), under Singjamei police station, today afternoon.

according to police sources, the combined team that rushed to the said location on being informed about presence of UG cadres observed two persons moving in a suspicious manner near the main entrance of Khoupum village at about 2.05 pm.

On being asked to stop and identify themselves the duo instead started firing with one getting killed on the spot in subsequent retaliatory action by the security forces, the sources maintained while adding that the second individual managed to escape.

Body of the deceased found laying about 200 metres near the Chandranadi river bank along the inter village road that connects Lilong Chajing and Khoupum is clad in a black T-shirt, trousers of olive green colour and wore chappals.

Police recovered one .38 revolver besides one live round and an empty case from the victim's possession, whose body has been deposited at RIMS morgue.

Meanwhile, one cadre each of the KCP, UNLF and PLA organisations have been netted by police commandos from different places yesterday.

Identifying the PLA cadre as one Lambamayum Shrikanta alias Boy alias Jiringamba (29) s/o (L) L Chaoba Singh of Singjamei Wangma kshetri Leikai, SSP (IW) L Kailun said in a statement that acting on credible information Imphal West police commandos the individual was picked up from his (Shrikanta) house at around 9.10 pm yesterday.

A statement issued by the SP (Thoubal) Clay Khongsai said one KCP (Sengoi faction) cadre namely Chingakham Boby Meitei (29) s/o Ch Parijat Singh of Tejpur Awang Leikai was apprehended at about 8 am from the same locality during the course a search operation conducted by the district commandos on being informed about presence of KCP cadres earlier in the morning.

The UNLF cadre identified as Telem Ranjoy alias Marum (26) s/o T Ibochouba of Khurai Chaithabi Leirak was arrested by commandos of Imphal East district from Khurai Sajor Leikai near babu Hotel at around 6.30 am yesterday, said SP (IE) Th Radheshyam Singh.

Ranjoy is said to have joined the UNLF organisation in April, 2006 through one Sanatomba of Chaithabi Leirak.
