28 election observers coming on Jan 17

Imphal, January 10: Altogether 28 election observers will arrive in the State on January 17 to oversee the preparations for the two phase State Assembly election on February 14 and 21 next.

The arrangements for providing security cover to the poll observers, sector magistrates and returning officers have been completed.

A source said that 6 observers will oversee the election in each district while another one will be posted at Jiribam.

The measures for providing security, vehicles and wireless sets to the observers have already been completed.

In the first phase polling in 40 valley constituencies, a total of 4157 unarmed personnel, 157 companies of security forces, one armed platoon and one section will take up poll duty.

A total of 2681 unarmed personnel, 429 companies of security forces, one platoon and two sections will be deployed, the source added.

The source further said that 1500 vehicles will be used in the forthcoming polls.

Each company of security forces will be given one light vehicle, one medium vehicle, two buses and one heavy truck.

Diesel vehicles will be supplied 40 litres of fuel per day while vehicles run by petrol will be given 30 litres per day.

Top police officials have sought Rs 14 crore for expenses on fuel and vehicle charges, he said.

The official source also said that for speedy communication with the Police Headquarters, all offices of the Chief Electoral Officer, DC/DEO and SDC/RO including those in Jiribam and Kangpokpi will be provided wireless sets from January 16.He further said that the CEO is sending the reports submitted by the Home Department on daily events to the Election Commission of India.
