Tight security ahead of Sonia tour

Imphal, February 08: Sonia Gandhi, Opposition leader in the Lok Sabha and president of All India Congress Committee, AICC is arriving tomorrow in Imphal to campaign for her party amidst a boycott call by the underground Revolutionary People's Front.

The Congress leader is expected to arrive at Tulihal airport at around noon in a special flight, according to MPCC sources.

Sonia is to attend two public meetings tomorrow at the Polo Ground, (Kangjeibung) and the Kadampokpi Sports complex, Thoubal.

The Congress president will also inaugurate the newly constructed Congress Bhavan at BT road.

She will also be accompanied by senior leaders including Pranab Mukerjee.

Sources said after her arrival at the airport, she will be chopper lifted to Thoubal to attend the public meeting and return to Imphal to attend the meeting at the Polo ground.

She will thereafter meet the Governor Ved Marwah at the Raj Bhavan before leaving Imphal at around 3:30 pm.

The MPCC president O Ibobi has appealed to leaders of all political parties to give Sonia Gandhi a warm welcome, and have urged the public to attend her public meetings.

In the meantime, security rehearsals in view of Sonia Gandhi's visit were conducted today in Imphal and at Thoubal.

Official sources said security measures have been further tightened in view of the boycott call by the underground RPF.

Special teams of the central intelligence agencies and the Special Protection Group are already in the state overseeing the security precautions being taken up for Sonia Gandhi's visit.

At least six bullet proof cars have reportedly been ferried from Delhi for her visit.

Reports from Thoubal say the Special Protection Group has opened a booth at the Kodompokpi group where the Congress leader will address a meeting.
