UCM appeals to PM to help flood victims

Imphal, August 19: The United Committee Manipur (UCM) has submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to draw his attention to the devastating flood in the four districts and the untold sufferings faced by the people of the state.

The UCM President Sapamcha Jadumani said the distress call has been made so that the affected people may get immediate relief.

While the people of Manipur are already suffering due to the economic depression and nonpayment of salaries of the govt employees, the recent heavy rains have also caused devastating floods in the four districts of Manipur bringing untold miseries, Jadumani said.

Due to the incessant rain, vast areas of the four districts namely Imphal East and West, Bishenpur and Thoubal have been submerged under water.

The sudden and unruly flood had already claimed more eight lives so far.

And the toll may be likely increased, it also said.

Further, UCM's preliminary survey shows a total toss of more than 30,000 hectares of paddy field.

In addition to that more than 30,000 houses have been destroyed and a few lakhs of people are rendered homeless.

In the absence of proper relief centres and the government help the sufferings of the people are boundless.

The financially beleaguered state govt cannot cope with the gigantic calamity, UCM further said.

Besides the human miseries, many animals have also lost heir lives and many are living in a pitiable condition, the President UCM said.

The people of Manipur have only one way to salvation to approach and appeal to the Prime Minister of the country Jadumani said in the memorandum.
