UG suspect shot dead, AR apprehends four

Lamka, September 07: A suspected underground activist was reportedly shot dead by the Imphal East district police commandos in an encounter which took place at Leitambi Loukon Kabokchaibi Leirak of Bamonkampu Awang Leikai, about 3 kms north-east of Irilbung police station in Imphal East district today.

According to police report, the Commandos have been laying in wait at Bamonkampu and Kalika area for last couple of days following special tip off on the movement of proscribed RPF/PLA activists.

Early morning today, the Commandos were carrying out search operation when an unidentified gunman opened fire at the Commandos and tried to flee.

The Commandos retaliated and killed the gunman.

One US-made 9 mm pistol, one magazine loaded with four live rounds of ammunition, some incriminating documents and a bag have been recovered from the possession of the slain UG suspect.

The police report further said that inside the bag a diary published by DIPR, registration card of the International Hospital, Assam and some other items were found.

The amount of money collected from various departments and the MLAs' local area development fund and the details of the expenditure were enumerated on the diary in which the name of one Naobi of Irom Meijrao is written.

While the registration card (without photograph) was issued in the name of one S Deban (37) s/o Biso of Singjamei Pishum, Imphal.

Police have picked up the body and kept it at the mortuary of RIMS Hospital.

Meanwhile, troops of the Assam Rifles apprehended two cadres of UNLF and one each of the PREPAK and KYKL organisations from different parts of the State since September 5.A statement issued by the PRO IGAR (S) informed that troops of 21 AR arrested the UNLF cadres from Tangjeng Khunou near Sugnu today and recovered one 9 mm pistol and four live rounds from their possession.

Further details are being ascertained, the PRO added.

The PREPAK cadre identified as 30 year old Biren of Tendongyang village was nabbed by troops of 23&39 AR units on September 5 from Sekmai area.

Items recovered from Biren includes two hand-grenades and same number of lathode bombs.

The KYKL cadre namely Ammu s/o Ali of Pangal Basti in Moreh was arrested on September 5 by troops of 31 AR from Moreh Gate No 2, the PRO added.
