Imphal, February 16: General secretary of the State CPI unit, Pheiroijam Parijat today said that the first phase poll held on February 14 made a mockery of democratic ideals as all democratic norms and ideals were flouted with impunity by some candidates and political parties.

Speaking to media persons at the CPI office this evening the veteran Communist leader said that the repoll ordered in 31 polling stations spread across 12 Assembly constituencies is enough proof that the election was marred by electoral malpractices.

The pre-poll and post-poll violence have defeated the very purpose of holding the election, said Parijat adding that democracy has been dealt a cruel blow by the ugly developments.

Parijat noted with regret that the mass June uprising was not well reflected during the election.

Outside force had also played no mean role in suffocating the true aspirations of the people, he said.

Gunmen hired by some candidates had also thrown the election process out of gear in certain places, Parijat alleged.

Another CPI leader N Mangi who contested from Kumbi AC alleged that one of his workers was severely assaulted by workers of BJP candidate, A Angousana at Saiton Meitei Leikai today morning.

The attackers also snatched Rs 20,000 from his worker, charged Mangi.

Recalling the incident, Mangi said one of his workers, Md Abdul Wahid of Saiton Awang Leikai was on his way to clear a debt of Rs 20,000 today at about 8 am when the BJP workers accosted him and beat him up.

The amount meant to clear the debt was also snatched away by the BJP workers, claimed Mangi.

Wahid is presently at Churachandpur district hospital in critical condition.

Even though Congress workers and BJP workers had violated all election norms and rigged booths in some polling stations in Kumbi, the ECI and CEO have turned down his (Mangi) representation to order repoll in some of the polling stations, said Mangi.

Chairman of the Central Control Committee of CPI, M Ibohal said there is no point in floating political parties here.

He said the pre-poll and post-poll violence occurred as many anti-social elements have been fielded by political parties.
