Speaker's home under attack, worker injured

Imphal, February 11: In continued pre-poll violence, one election worker was injured when unidentified gunmen attacked the residence of Assembly Speaker and current NCP candidate in Thongju Assembly constituency Dr S Dhananjoy at Okram Chuthek Makha Kitna Panung at around 1.30 this morning.

Reports said that around seven youths who claimed themselves to be the NCP workers came on a white Maruti Gypsy and tried to enter the house of the Speaker.

The youths fired several rounds at the residence of Dhananjoy when they were resisted by his workers who were already stationed there.

The injured is identified as Ningombam Boby (28).He was injured at his right leg.

He has been admitted to the JN Hospital for treatment.

In another incident, unidentified persons fired several rounds at the house of Congress candidate in Yaiskul AC Elangbam Kunjeshwor at around 6.15 this evening.

Security guards of the candidate also returned the fire.

However, no one was injured in the incident.

Reports said that three youths came in a blue colour Maruti car and fired around 7-8 rounds from AK rifles at the residence of the candidate.

Retaliatory fire from security guards shattered the rear glass of the car, eyewitnesses said.

Additional security forces went after the assailants.

However there is no report of any arrest till now.

It may be recalled that unidentified gunmen attacked the residences of FPM candidate W Thoiba and MSCP candidate in Thanga AC H Manisana yesterday.

Nobody was injured in the incidents.

Meanwhile, a Tata Sumo driver requisitioned by MSCP candidate in Hiyanglam AC Rajendra died at the RIMS after he was found unconscious inside his vehicle at Tokpa Ching under Waikhorig police station this morning.

The driver was first admitted at Kakching Rural Hospital yesterday evening.

He was later brought to RIMS at around 1.30 in the morning.
