Imphal, October 02: Describing it as an uncivilised act which is unthinkable any where in the modern world, United Committee Manipur (UCM) has strongly condemned the recent incident of vandalising vehicles with number plates written in Meetei Mayek/Manipuri scripts along the National Highway 39 in Senapati district.

Such uncivilised act of vandalism can be committed by only those who know nothing about their own origin and history and are hell beont on creating animosity among the people of various ethnic groups living in a State like Manipur which has a 2000-year old recorded history of its own, assistant secretary of information and public relations of UCM Ng Deba Meetei said in a statement today.

He said UCM really feels pity for those who are hell bent on igniting communal tension among the people over a dream which will not be realised at all.

The people of Manipur should be wary of the sinister designs of these people, the statement added.

Wondering at the logic behind targeting the script which had already been included in the 8th schedule of the Constitution, UCM questioned whether the same group of people would have banned use of India currency notes if the Manipuri script had been included in the said currency.

The need of the hour is to bring about understanding among all concerned and the civil organisations have a great role to play in this regard, the UMC statement, a said, while regretting over what seems like to be inflammatory remarks from some quarters over the present impasse.

UCM also flayed the Government of Manipur for allegedly keeping mum over the whole issue and said it is high time for the people to teach a lesson or two to the Government which have not been affected even by the propaganda of the Central leaders that Manipur is the most violent State in the region.
