Govt pays for 5 disappeared persons

Imphal, August 01: Replying to questions raised by Opposition MLA O Joy today.

Chief Minister O Ibobi, who also holds the Home portfolio, informed the Assembly that the family members of five persons who disappeared after they were picked up by security personnel have been compensated.

The Chief Minister said that a sum of Rs 1 lakh has been paid to the family members of C Paul (33) of Halang village, Ukhrul district who was arrested by security personnel on March 10, 1983 and never returned home.

Likewise Rs 1 lakh has also been paid to the family members of C Daniel (40) of Halang village, Ukhrul district, who was picked up on March 10, 1983.Speaking further, the Chief Minister said .that the Gauhati High Court issued an order on February 26 this year directing the Centre to pay Rs 1.50 lakhs for the disappearance of Laishram Bijoykumar of Thangmeiband Hijam Dewan Leikai who was picked up on the intervening night of June 4 and June 5 in 1996.The State Government has also been asked to pay Rs 50 thousand, by the same Court, the Chief Minister said.

A sum of Rs 3 lakhs have also been paid to the family members of school boy Yumlembam Sanamacha of Angtha Mayai Leikai who disappeared after he was picked up on February 12, 1998 at about 11.30 pm.

Family members of Md Tayeb Ali (25) of Kairang Muslim village have also been paid a compensation of Rs 3 lakhs.

Md Tayeb Ali was picked up by security personnel on July 25, 1999 at about 10 am.
