Post poll violence on, Bishnupur bazar closed

Imphal, February 28: Defeated candidates and their supporters are engaging in violence and disruptive activities in the aftermath of the declaration of poll results.

Bishnupur market and the shops were forced to remain shut today.

At Wangoo under Kumbi A/C, arson, vandalism and assaults on people marked the day.

At Bishnupur the main market and the shops were allegedly forced to close down by supporters of a candidate in the A/who lost to the INC candidate Govindas Konthoujam.

However there was no disruption to normal traffic along Tiddim line.

After N Mangi of CPI won the Kumbi Assembly seat, some supporters of a defeated candidate torched houses belonging to workers of Mangi at Wangoo.

Moreover, many of Mangi supporters were severely assaulted last night, said sources.

The CPI State executive, at its meeting held today, strongly condemned such acts of violence.

The meeting decried such highly undemocratic violent activities perpetrated against people exercising their franchise guaranteed by the Constitution of India.

It also urged the authority concerned to contain the spate of violence and to book the culprits.

The CPI State executive demanded compensation to the victims whose properties have been vandalised and to take up actions so that the fled away persons and their families can come back without any sense of fear.

On the other hand, following the outbreak of violence among poll workers in Kyamgei under Keirao A/C yesterday, State police and para military forces are still deployed in the area.

It is reported that situation is still tense in the area.
