MSCP pulls out of NDA

Imphal, February 27: The Manipur State Congress Party, now a constituent member of the newly formed Secular Progressive Front (SPF) led by the Congress has withdrawn support to the NDA Government led by the BJP at New Delhi.

The decision to withdraw support was taken in a joint meeting of the party's central executive committee and the six newly elected members at the official residence of Th Chaoba, the Lok Sabha MP at Babupara today.

Chaoba is the president of this regional party.

The decision to sever ties with the NDA has been taken in view of the alliance with the Congress in Manipur.

The party is, however, yet to elect a leader of the legislature party.

The issue could not be finalized today and sources said the leader could be elected tomorrow.

Talking to reporters Chaoba welcomed the election Okram Ibobi, MPCC (I) president as the CLP leader, saying he is a competent leader.

Giving reasons for joining hands with the Congress Chaoba said taking into consideration the need to install a stable and able Government his party decided to join the Congress in forming a coalition Government.

He said a common minimum programme of the SPF would he worked out.

A high power committee will also be constituted comprising leaders of Front partners and legislature party, leaders.

Chaoba also hinted that the size of the Ministry would be small.

The MP said his party had decided to sever ties with the NDA to pave the way for a stable Government in Manipur that can tackle issues confronting the State.

When asked about the leader of the MSCP legislature party Chaoba said a meeting of the members may elect the leader tomorrow.

When asked to comment on the poor performance of the MSCP in the just concluded election the MP said many party candidates could not make it due to "muscle and money and power as well as the gun culture." Meanwhile the MPP Working Committee reviewed the post poll developments today.
