Gandhi assures MUSU delegates

Imphal, August 24: AICC president Sonia Gandhi today assured a delegate of Manipur University Students' Union, that the UPA will stand by the clause in the Common Minimum Programme which stated that the territories of the North East States will not be disturbed.

The Congress leader gave this assurance when a MUSU team led by its president Ashokumar called on her today at Parliament, said a statement.

During the meeting the delegates highlighted the suffering of the people during the 52 days economic blockade enforced by the ANSAM and the impending fear that another blockade is round the corner.

To the concern raised by die team, Sonia Gandhi replied, "We all are deeply pained by the situation in Manipur, and the Prime Minister and Home Minister offices are closely monitoring the situation to bring about a solution, said the statement.

The delegation also submitted a 15 point memorandum and gave its commitment to work towards a Manipur where the different ethnic communities co-exist peacefully with co-operation and dignity so that peace will reign, added the statement.
