Opposition parties meet Governor

Imphal, May 20 2010: Representatives of seven political parties today called on with the Governor, Gurbachan Jagat and pressed him to summon a special session of the Manipur Legislative Assembly at the earliest.

President of the NCP state unit and former Chief Minister, Radhabinod who was among the representatives briefed the Governor on the resolution taken by the seven political parties yesterday, said senior MPP leader O Joy after coming out from the Imphal Raj Bhavan.

They pressed the Governor to directly handle the situation and find a means to ensure opening of the national highway observing frequent disturbances on the highways which is the lifelines of the people of the state and extortion of money by the NSCN (IM) in the form of "tax" taking advantage of peace talk with the Centre.

They also pressed the Governor to intervene in improving the NH-53 on war footing.

Observing that Nagaland government is interfering to the internal affairs of the state and talking on breaking the integrity of the state, they also requested the Governor to appraise the Central government and Union home ministry in stopping the government of Nagaland fro doing such activities.

While appraising the matter, they also observed that the Constitution of India does not permit a Chief Minister talking on the matter which would hurt the affairs of other federal state, O Joy said.

It has been a long pending demand of the people of the hill districts to conduct elections to the ADC.

The 3rd amendment of the Manipur (Hills) District Council Act, 2008 was passed by the House of the state Assembly with the consent of 20 MLAs of the hill districts.

When no one protest against the Act while passing in the House, why some sections are trying to disturbed the elections and why the seven MLAs who agreed to conduct the election are submitting their resignations to the Speaker.

Besides this, asking why NSCN (IM) general secretary Th Muivah, whose intention is to disintegrate Manipur, wanted to enter the state, he went on to asked expressing the reason behind the oppositions demand for summon of a special session of the Assembly at earliest.

Considering the issued on his head, oppositions are not meeting and talks with him for the time being on the present issues ahead of the state.

But the issue of seeking resignations by the seven MLAs is a "very complicated" one, oppositions wanted to discuss with him, he observed.

Governor after patient hearing informed the representatives that government is providing situation reports of the state everyday.

The recent visit of Union Home Secretary GK Pillai was part of the follow up what the opposition appraised, the Governor informed them assuring that in the same manner, he will bring up the demands of the oppositions to the Centre's knowledge, O Joy added.
