EC officials discuss poll security

Imphal, April 14: Deputy Election Commissioner Dr Noor Mohammad and Centre's Security Nodal Officer IG CRPF KTD Singh today met the State Govt officials at the conference hall of the Old Secretariat building and held a lengthy discussion on the preparations taken by the State Govt for the up coming polls as well as the security deployment in the State today.

The meeting which was chaired by Dr Noor Mohammad was attended by Chief Electoral Officer V Chibber, Nodal Officer ADGP Y Joykumar, Deputy Commissioners, SPs and representatives of Central parami- litary forces.

Members present at the meeting besides thoroughly dis- cussing on whether the additional security forces sent by the Centre would be in time for the polls also focused on how much security forces would be needed for holding the upcoming polls peacefully in a free and fair manner.

Dr Noor, during the course of the meeting, also informed that he would be submitting a detailed report to the Election Commission with regard to the State's demand for additional security forces for the polls.

Prior to the above mentioned meeting, Dr Noor also had a meeting with political leaders of the State at the Old secretariat deliberating on the present political scenario following the imposition of ban on all electioneering by various proscribed outfits.

BJP leader MLA Bhorot who also attended the meeting strongly opposed any idea of postponing the polls as it would mean more expenditure and added that it would be more proper to deploy additional security forces and hold the polls as scheduled.

Informing that militants of a particular group are threatening and preventing BJP workers from canvassing in the outer constituency, Bharat appealed to the Deputy Election Commissioner to look into the matter.

Bharat also stated that Central security forces should be put on patrol in the rural areas 48 hours before the polls or else the turn out of the voters would very meagre.

Leaders of various political parties which took part in the meeting strongly opposed any idea of postponing the polls and at the same time demanded for additional security forces.

Meanwhile, some of the matters which were discussed at today's meeting have been faxed to the Election Commission late in the evening.
