Bombs retrieved, protest staged

Imphal, September 13: In continued violence, bomb experts of the State Police today retrieved three bombs from different parts of Imphal which were later defused successfully.

Out of two recovered bombs, all hand grenades, which were defused at an open area of Lamphelpat at around 7.30 am today, one was found placed by unidentified persons at the Thangmeiband Yumnam Leikai, Tabung Pukhri Mapal residence of retired Superintending Engineer of IFCD Nongthombam Kunjaraj at around 5 am today while the other was retrieved from under the shutter of a shop 'Ashok Steel House' located near the Gurudwara of Thangal Bazar, also in the morning today.

The third bomb, an unexploded Chinese-made hand grenade, which was lobbed inside the Singjamei Chingamakhong residential compound of EE of PWD Chirom Ranbir at around 3.30 pm had been reportedly destroyed by the bomb experts at a nearby place.

In condemnation of placing the handgrenade at the residential gate of retired Superintending Engineer of IFC Nongthombam Kunjaraj, local Meira Paibis staged a protest demonstration at Tabung Pukhri Mapal club premises today.

Kunjaraj reportedly retired from service in February 2005.Expressing surprise over the incident, the protestors wondered why the bomb had been placed at the residential gate of a retired and honest Government employee.

Kunjaraj is also said to be the president of Thangmeiband Improvement Club (TIC).

Demanding a clarification from all concerned in this regard, the protestors also appealed to all refrain from indulging in such violence incidents in residential area.

According to family members, no demand letter had been served or threat given from any UG group and they have no idea who would be responsible for placing the bomb as Kunjaraj has already retired from service.

Meanwhile, two objected that appeared to be bombs were found under the Singjamei bridge causing panic among the people of the area at around 8 am today.

After the objects were established as steel colour water flasks, a mobile team of Police Commandos were found Police Commandos destroyed them.
