Driver hurt in stone pelting on NH-39

Imphal, August 24 2010: A driver of a freight DI Tata heading for Imphal on NH-39 sustained serious injuries when he was hit by stones thrown by suspected blockade supporters on the way today afternoon, on the first day of the commencement of the extended 25-day economic blockade of UNC on the national highways.

Suspected blockade supporters attacked freight trucks heading for Imphal with security escorts.

The attack took place in the Mao to Tadubi stretch reports said adding that in the stoning, the driver of the DI Tata carrying Ice Cream sustained injuries in the head.

The injured driver has been identified as Khundrakpam Basanta (35) son of late Ibochou of Langthabal Khunou, Imphal.

He has been admitted at Shija Hospital, the report added.

The DI Tata was among 178 freight trucks including 18 DI Tata heading for Imphal from Mao gate in the afternoon with security escort.

Windshields of many other vehicles were also reportedly shattered in the stoning, the report added.
