Imphal, March 25: With the date of election approaching fast, political parties are making last ditch efforts to tide over the impasse on consensus candidates in both the ruling and Opposition alliance partners.

While the ruling partner in the SPF Government CPI has convened a meeting tomorrow to decide on the party stance of either supporting the would-be candidate of the Congress in the Outer Manipur Parliamentary constituency or not following the reported agreement between AICC president Sonia Gandhi and NCP leader Sharad Pawar to field Holkhomang Haokip as Congress-NCP common candidate, the Opposition DPA is also convening a meeting tomorrow to decide on fielding a consensus candidate for the Inner seat.

A spokesman of the CPI told The Sangai Express that a meeting of left parties including the CPI, CPM, RSP and JD (U) would be held tomorrow to review CPI's earlier decision to support Congress candidate in the Outer seat.

The party is most likely to withdraw support if the MPCC endorses the AICC-NCP pact to field Holkhomang Haokip of the NCP as common candidate in the Outer Parliamentary seat, said the spokesman.

In case the meeting to be held tomorrow at Irawat Bhavan decides to review the earlier decision of the CPI in view of the new development at the national level it would be a volte-face from the earlier understanding reached, said the spokesman while informing that report of RSP contemplating to field its own candidate in the Outer would also figure prominently during the meeting.

As part of the CPI steps for the upcoming poll, a 27 member election Campaign Committee of the party's Bishnupur district unit has been constituted with S Ibohal singh as the chairman and S Nilkamal singh as the secretary.

On the other hand a spokesman of the MPCC stated that constant touch is being maintained with the AICC leaders to review the Congress-NCP agreement and allow MPCC to go for a friendly contest with the NCP candidate in the Outer seat that will go to polls on April 20.Even as the issue of a consensus DPA candidate continues to elude the Opposition a meeting has been convened at the residence of MLA L Ibomcha tomorrow to finalize on the matter.

Mention may be made that DPA partners FPM and MPP had already projected their respective candidates for the Inner Manipur Parliamentary constituency while the BJP had already announced fielding party candidates in both the Outer and Inner seats.

To finalize the DPA fate on solving the issue of common candidature for the elections the BJP has also been invited to attend the meeting even though the national party has already made its intention clear by officially announcing list of candidates for both the seats, said a FPM spokesman.

Even if the meeting fails to arrive at a definite decision on fielding FPM president and former Deputy Chief Minister Dr L Chandramani as common candidate of the DPA the party will nevertheless project the FPM leader as consensus candidate and contest the Inner seat on a friendly fight with DPA partner's candidates, asserted the spokesman.

Dr Chandramani's candidature has so far won support of two regional parties like the MNC and DRPP who are in the DPA alliance, claimed the spokesman expressing confidence that party nomination would be morally boosted if the MPP withdraws candidature of Dr Nimaichand Luwang.
