Private member resolution on Kangla passed

Imphal, August 08: The Assembly today unanimously passed a private member resolution moved by MLA I Hemochandra to make Kangla a World Heritage Site.

The resolution was passed after minute discussion by the Assembly in the evening session.

Moving the private resolution, Hemochandra said that it would be very positive if the Government takes proper measures not to deface the salient features of Kangla.

The MLA said that Kangla dates back to thousands of years and symbolizes the place from where Manipur was governed during the days of the Maharaj.

Today Kangla is regarded as a sacred place having cultural and historical importance.

The occupation of Kangla by the Assam Rifles and IRB has greatly inconvenienced the people who want to offer prayers at this place which is considered sacred by many, said the MLA.

Welcoming the information that the Centre has earmarked a certain amount of money to develop Kangla, the MLA said it would be in the fitness of things if comments and ideas are first welcomed from the public before the actual work begins.

The Centre also ought to approach the UNESCO to declare Kangla as a World Heritage Site, added Hemochandra.

After listening to the resolution moved by the MLA, Chief Minister O Ibobi said that all the members of the house should support the resolution in the interest of the people.

The Assembly also passed the Demands for Excess Grant amounting to Rs 15 crores for 13 Government Departments for the period 19991997-98 in the evening session o the House today.
