Rally staged, police disperse

Imphal, August 07: Police had to resort to lathi charge, tear gas shells and rubber bullets near Sanjenthong to disperse a large group of rallyists who tried to make their way to the Chief Minister's bungalow to submit a memorandum urging the Government to take up the case of L Monika.

The rallyists mainly consisted of representatives of DESAM, AMSU, sportper-sons, students of SAI and National Sports Academy, AMBBA, Manipur Women Hockey Association, SAI, NERC, YWO Singjamei, MACHA LEIMA, HERICOUN, MAFYF.

MSA, Mapi Council, UPF, All Manipur Kick Boxing Federation, MOA, MIKIIOL, AM ADA, WACAK and NIPCO.

Five rallyists, all girls were injured in the police crackdown.

After some time a team of representative was allowed to submit the memorandum to the Chief Minister.

The memorandum warned that if the name of Monika is not cleared by 6 pm of today (August 7) then they would be constrained to launch a series of intense agitation.

The Chief Minister was also urged to pressurise the Sports Authority of India so that the culprits responsible for maligning the patriotic Indian athletes from Manipur are penalised.

Earlier in day, a dharna was staged in front of the Indoor Stadium at Khuman Lampak.

The protestors also burnt an effigy of SAI Director RK Naidu.
