State rolls up sleeves for ADC polls

Imphal, May 18, 2010: To ensure smooth conduct of the upcoming two-phased election to the Autonomous District Councils of the hill districts, a co-ordination meeting chaired by Chief Secretary DS Poonia was held today.

Forty-four companies of Central Paramilitary forces are expected to be deployed for the elections.

The meeting held in the conference hall of the Secretariat South Block at around 11 am was attended by State Election Commissioner and Secretary, IG (Ops), officials of PHED and DIPR, Deputy Commissioners and SPs of the districts concerned.

For the first and the second phase of the election, 33 members and 35 members have already been declared elected uncontested while none have filed nominations to contest in the election from six constituencies.

So, for holding the election to elect the remaining 69 members, necessary vehicles, water supply and polling personnel would be airlifted.

According to a source, Ministry of Home Affairs has given approval to deployment of 44 companies of CRPF for security coverage during the two-phased elections.

The security categorisation, however, would be carried out by the Police Department.

In the first phase of the election which would be held on May 26, the fate of 170 candidates in Churachandpur ADC, 60 candidates in Chandel ADC and 82 candidates in Sadar Hill ADC would be decided.

The second phase of the election will be held on June 2 and it will decide the fate of 29 candidates in Ukhrul ADC, 105 candidates in Tamenglong ADC and 40 candidates in Senapati ADC.
