36 hrs counter-blockade on routes leading to Nagaland

Dimapur, June 07 2010: A Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed by 12 (twelve) organizations under the aegis of the All Assam Manipuri Students organization at Manja Town, Karbi-Anglong District today issued a statement informing that a road blockade has been called for 36 (thirty six) hours on NH-39 (Numaligarh to Dimapur) and NH-36 (Nagaon to Dimapur) with effect from 5 am of June 8, 2010.This was informed through a press note issued by Thingnam Chandrakumar, Convener of JAC.

It has been informed that the blockade is only for those trucks carrying essential goods and petroleum products into Nagaland.

Owner of the trucks carrying essential materials to Nagaland have been requested not ply their trucks on these two National Highways and warned that if any untoward incident takes place during this duration, it will be their responsibility.

According to the press note, the blockade on the these two National Highways will be extended if the All Naga Student's Association of Manipur (ANSAM), United Naga Council (UNC) in Manipur and Naga Students' Federation ( NSF) extend and intensify their blockade further in Nagaland and Manipur.

"The JAC had started sending its volunteers to all strategic locations to launch the blockade", informed the press note.

It was further informed that the purpose of the JAC was to launch and carry out various democratic process to remove hardship faced by the tribal and non tribal people of Manipur due to prolong economic blockade on NH 39 and 53 by the ANSAM, UNC in Manipur and which was supported and intensified by the NSF in Nagaland along NH 39.According, it was stated that the formation of the JAC was a follow up action of the two peaceful rallies and meeting held in Assam at Hojai (on 17th May, 2010) and at Amarjan Village (on 26th May, 2010 respectively).

At the meeting held today at Manja, the JAC had decided to call road blockade, it informed.
