Imphal, May 15 2010: The Human Rights Law Network (HRLN) Manipur, a division of socio-legal information centre on Saturday strongly protested the 'unwarranted use of force' in the incident of firing which led to the death of two youths at Mao Gate in the Nagaland-Manipur border on May 6 .

M Rakesh, Director of HRLN, Manipur stated that it 'strongly protest the excessive use of force by the police and security forces and as result of which young Naga people lost their lives in totally illegal and unjustified shooting'.

Questioning the rationality of firing, the rights network argued that 'the police and security forces have no business in opening fire on un-armed Naga procession'.

It is worth mentioning that Chako and Loshou, both hailing from Kalinamai village were killed while over 80 others were injured at Mao Gate on May 6 following the clash between the Manipur security forces and the people who support Th.Muivah's visit to Manipur.

Mention may be also made that Manipur Government had ordered to institute a Magisterial inquiry into the Mao Gate incident of May 6 apart from paying ex-gratia to the next kin of the two youths and financial compensation for those injured persons in the incident.
